Is it the heat of summer? Is it a post-Pride gift? Is it the spirit of Megan Rapinoe and the United States women’s national soccer team moving through us? Whatever the reason, this week four queer female artists were compelled to drop some incredible tracks on us. Check out this round-up, and happy Fri-gay everyone!
I Wish by Hayley Kiyoko
Have you ever chewed someone out and then went to cry in the bathroom? This is the musical equivalent of exactly that situation. Hayley Kiyoko gets angry and funky on the verse about a cold lover, but her falsetto on the chorus soars into gut-wrenching wistfulness: “I wish, I wish, I wish I found love.” Equally impressive is her self-directed music video, which pays major homage to The Craft in costume and The Exorcist in choreography.
Prophet by King Princess
As fans continue to beg for the long-teased full album, KP dropped yet another crumb in the form of this single. The oozing, moody track is a stylistic departure for her, borrowing heavily from 90s R&B to supplement her Fiona Apple-esque vocals. The lyrics, though, are classic King Princess, full of lust and worship: “Cuz I can only think about you/ and what it’s like to walk around you”.
Taste by Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine
The butch Adele of your dreams and her best pal are back with the sultry, late-summer jam that is going to work perfectly on your pool party playlist. Fine demonstrates real range and scales back her normally powerful vocals to build a crooning, dreamy chorus. The song’s driving bass and bright synths make this track a little tropical and a lot catchy.
Gone by Charli XCX ft. Christine and the Queens
It’s time to forgive Charli XCX for the dumpster fire that was “Girls,” because she brings pansexual icon Christine and the Queens onto this powerful, bumping track and, maybe more importantly, the incredibly hot, bondage-inspired music video. The song is a defiant inner monologue about toxic people and paranoia, and Christine really outshines Charli on her own track. It’s unsurprising from France’s greatest gift to the LGBTQIA+ community.
